We had a Heat Pump installed in our condo. After getting three quotes from all very professional companies, Cunning Electrical, Rick, (aka the Owner) stood out as the most thorough, explaining in detail how the job would/could be done. The devil is in the detail and Rick left nothing out, which was very impressive. Rick also provided us with information on the rebate program and financing if we wanted to use it.
On installation day Jason and Sean (and Dave) arrived on time as scheduled, did a superb job, explaining things as they went, and of course how to operate it. There was absolutely NO mess when they completed installation, or any extra work for us to do. I called Cunning Energy and spoke with Rick regarding a horrible experience and issues I had with a previous heat pump contractor and hoping he can help me. Rick spent a lot of his free time talking to me over the phone and educating me on sizes and specs of heat pumps to best fit my home and the reasoning why my current installed pump would not work for my home.
Rick sent a very knowledgeable employee to my home for measurements and investigation of my current heat pump. Rick himself came over for measurements and walked me through the entire process. Once my court case was somewhat settled with the previous contractor, Rick sent his crew to my home for the removal of the defective pump and installation of a new and upgraded pump. It only took a day to install and after having no heat for nearly two winters, my house was warm within hours after hookup!

With retirement in mind, I researched heat pumps and air-conditioning units to replace the hot water baseboard heating system of our soon to be renovated 1977 era home in Fall River NS. I made a cold call to Cunning Energy and soon received a return call from Rick Cunning. I have a Multiple Sclerosis and require a cool environment to be able to function, I took a lot of Rick's time discussing various options to convert my home to allow for efficient air conditioning.
Having grown up in the 1960's in a forced air heated house (dusty and noisy) I was not in favour of installing ducting in my home. However, after several lengthy phone conversations Rick convinced me that a forced air system was the best thing for me. The ducting was installed and an air source heat pump was put in service. Immediately we were pleased with the efficiency of the system, the improvements to air quality etc. however, that is not what I am writing about today.
After living with the system for 6 years, I look back at the angst I felt over installing the ducting system and I have to thank Rick for taking the time to convince me. We now enjoy clean dry air everywhere in our home, the basement is as dry and as comfortable as the main floor of our home, the ducting is not a dust distributer because we replace filters monthly and after 6 years the ducting is still clean. It took quite some time to find someone who would talk with us about central air units as opposed to heat pumps. We did not want a heat pump. Cunning Energey was recommended to us and we made the call.
Rick came to our home and took the time to discuss options and listenedd to what "we" wanted and made suggestions based on our current heating system. He was such a breath of fresh air. We had a Air Exchange system installed a few years ago in our 45 year old home. We found the owner hands-on and excellent to deal with in explaining the system.The unit made a very noticeable difference in improving the air quality in our home. Install was efficient and quality of work was excellent.
Last year we decided to have Cunning Energy install a heat Pump unit. The installation crew were very professional and courteous while in our home and were done mid afternoon and took the time to explain the operation of the two units installed.
Very impressed by their quality of workmanship and the system was so much better than what we imagined. Provides excellent heat in the spring, fall & winter and keeps the house cool and comfortable in the hot and humid days of summer. Wish we did it years ago! Our power bills have decreased significantly as we do not use our electric baseboard heat in most rooms anymore so the unit is paying for itself as advertised.
Wanted to get a heat pump installed to replace my oil ducted system (in Dartmouth). Wanted to take advantage of the financing, so went through the list of approved contractors and arbitrarily reached out to some different companies to get quotes. Other places I called had salesy sales people come and it was a classic pitch. Whereas, the owner Rick came and we went through the options in detail.
My situation was maybe a bit more complicated than usual because ducted and ductless were both an option. I decided to go with the ducted system and to retrofit the inefficient system that I have, as it would distribute the heating/cooling better throughout hard to reach areas like the master bedroom. Anyway, I had a tonne of questions that would occur to me randomly so I'd call up Rick, probably 8 times and ask these questions. He'd answer them clearly and thoroughly and never seemed bothered that I'd call him. He walks you through all the options regarding HVAC, financing, grants (even suggestions on how to best sell the oil equipment), His team was quick to come through after submitting the paperwork. They worked hard and were friendly to make the changes in the house.
It's only day two of having it all installed, but we have an effective, heavy duty heating system that's working wonders compared to what we had before. It should be noted that all the other companies had told me I'd have to upgrade my 100 amp panel to do the central system, which I had no desire in doing. But this is not true, the electrician came by and did a load calculation and determined that it's perfectly within code to use the 100 amp breaker (it did require taking out some currently unused breakers, which needed to be done anyway). I'd recommend you plan on having someone around when the work is being done because it's a collaborative process, especially with an old house, for where things need to be cut and placed.
I highly recommend Cunning - I'll be using them again for my next job (a ductless mini-split for another unit).
First off, I'd like to thank Rick for all the help over the past months and his excellent costumer service. Was never left stranded when my system was having multiple problems. Rick and his team where there to help me through this, and in the end we decided a new unit was the best option. Jason and the crew are excellent very professional. I interviewed a number of companies as well as obtained a number of quotes with respect to the purchase and installation of a heat pump to replace the forced hot air furnace in our home. Rick Cunning attended my residence and provided a quote as well as information related to the efficiencies of heat pumps and why this was a good idea for us. He returned to our home on a second occasion to provide additional information to my wife who had questions which I could not answer. Within a week or so, he rearranged their schedule to accommodate our installation.
His crew were exceptional! In and out within a day and finished up with a very neat and clean job. I would not hesitate to recommend them.
